Wednesday, April 8 – Intruder Mixes Things Up in the Downtown Canyon

Astrid was on the nest through the night. Ares first arrived at the box at 5:15 AM but she wasn’t ready to get off the eggs and she sent him away. They switched at 6:13 and Ares was on incubation duty. Astrid did some flying around the State Building. At one point she was seen landing on the west face of the building. She may have been checking Ares’ pantry. She came to the crossperch at 8:25, but Ares wasn’t willing to leave; she allowed him to stay. She spent some time on a steeple perch and then returned to the box at 9:13. She had a full crop and had obviously found or caught some breakfast. She had to convince Ares to leave the eggs, but she was nice about it and beaked with him instead of stomping on his wing. However, she did make her impatient guttural clicking sound before the switch, which meant she wasn’t about to take no for an answer.
Ares was back to the box asking to take over at 11:24. He tried to shift her off the eggs, but she was resolved to stay, and he left instead. At 12:44 PM, Astrid left the box calling. There was a falcon intruder in the canyon. First, she landed above Ares’ perch on the State Building as if she was assessing the situation. She then darted off – obviously meaning business. Ares moved to the lookout position on the roof of the State Building, but then screeched to the nest box only a couple of minutes later and climbed onto the eggs. The eggs had only been left alone for 4 minutes. He announced her return to the State Building at 12:57. She moved to the steeple perch a few minutes later. At around 3 PM the falcons switched at the box and Astrid took over. Ares initially went to the State Building but then purposefully flew off to the northeast. At 4:00, both falcons were up and giving chirping alarm calls. Ares was back to the box after five minutes, but Astrid was out of sight – presumably dealing with an intruder. She returned to the State Building at 4:25 and at 5 PM she was back to the steeple. They switched again at 5:30 and Astrid took over on the eggs. She would be there for the rest of the night. Ares was seen perched on the north face of the State Building until around 7 PM. Goodnight falcons.
